The Agony, Open - after Mantegna SOLD
Original and prints available
This abstract painting is a reworking of The Agony in The Garden - Mantegna, looking to represent the energy of the painting and the experience of looking at it. This ‘open’ version highlights the illusion of the sense of solidity in the original image, indeed in all our perceptions. The original was painted in around 1460 and was inspired by a Bellini drawing. I love renaissance paintings, they were enormously powerful in their time. Ordinary people only ever got to see still images in the church paintings depicting powerful scenes from the bible. There is a detailed discussion about that original in my blog.
